Student Rights & Responsibilities

Oakland Community College (OCC) provides reasonable academic accommodations to qualified students with documented disabilities through the ACCESS Office. This is done in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Students who receive accommodations are responsible for helping ensure those accommodations are used correctly and on time.

Students with disabilities must meet the same course objectives and learning outcomes as all other students. Accommodations do not change course requirements. Students must still meet essential course and program standards.

Student Responsibilities

Students registered with ACCESS must:

  • Meet all academic and technical standards for each course, including attendance, participation (when required), deadlines, and the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Provide current documentation that shows a diagnosed condition and explains how it affects academic performance.
  • Request accommodations each semester after registering for classes.
  • Understand that accommodations are not retroactive. They only begin after approval and after instructors receive the Notification of Accommodations (NOA).
  • Inform ACCESS right away of any schedule changes (add/drop/change sections).
  • Communicate with instructors about how accommodations will be used.
  • Contact ACCESS promptly if accommodations are not being provided as approved.

Failure to follow ACCESS procedures may delay or prevent accommodations.

Important Information

  • Only accommodations approved by the OCC ACCESS Office will be provided. Documentation or letters from other schools do not automatically qualify a student for accommodations at OCC.
  • OCC may request additional or updated documentation when needed.
  • All disability-related records are kept confidential under FERPA.
  • OCC does not discriminate based on disability or any other protected status.
