A simple sign can start a conversation, create a connection and help someone feel
seen.
Throughout Deaf Awareness Month in September, OCC is celebrating the Deaf and hard of hearing community, its culture,
languages, experiences, contributions and the many ways of communicating and connecting.
The celebration includes:
- Sept. 21–27: International Week of the Deaf
- Sept. 23: International Day of Sign Languages
- Sept. 27: World Deaf Day
Together, these observances are an opportunity to recognize the richness of Deaf culture
and the essential role sign languages have in connecting people.
Wear blue on Sept. 23
To mark International Day of Sign Languages, OCC will be celebrating alongside the
World Federation of the Deaf to ‘light up in blue.’ With landmarks around the globe
lighting up, OCC students and employees can show their support by wearing blue on
Wednesday, Sept. 23.
A sweet way to learn
The Nest, OCC’s new student food pantry, kicked off its opening the week of Sept.
7 with a sweet invitation: Learn the ASL sign for “cookie.” It’s a simple reminder
that even one sign can spark connection and deepen our appreciation for different
languages and cultures.
The conversation will continue in November with Cromania!, an entertaining one-person
show featuring Deaf comedian and storyteller K. Crom Saunders.
Communication connects us. Join us as we learn and make space for one another and
build a community where every language, culture, experience and voice belongs.
