From Construction Classroom to Job-Ready in 8-weeks

Precious McNeil previously worked as a laborer for a demolition company. To improve her career opportunities in her field, she decided to participate in OCC’s Pre-Apprenticeship Construction training program to gain more knowledge of the construction field.

OCC’s program gives students a chance to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to quickly gain the skills needed to start a new career in construction. The eight-week program at the Auburn Hills campus covers an introduction to the construction industry, working with hand and power tools, material handling, basic safety, and First Aid. The training program also offers students several certifications like OSHA 30, American Heart Association CPR & First Aid, National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) credentials and more.

In addition to in-class lectures, the training includes lab time with a variety of hands-on activities.  Projects vary by the cohort, but students in McNeil’s cohort built a workbench, stool and toolbox, items they could take the items home at the end of the training. They also worked collaboratively to build a staircase.

McNeil frequently volunteered to use the power tools in the lab. “I love the program. It gives you hands-on experience,” She said.

She also said that the instructor, Paul Dunaj, always had something for the students to do and took the time to show them, even if they finished with a project or assignment early.

“Precious was eager to learn new skills,” Dunaj added.

In addition to classroom lectures and lab time, the training includes a variety of employer engagement activities:  classroom presentations, tours, and interview day. Students from the second cohort interviewed with five companies on the last day of the training. One of the companies McNeil was interviewed with the Cornerstone Construction Group, and within two weeks, she received a job offer letter. She was hired as a full-time Field Technician.
