Emergency Vehicle Operations Refresher
Instructors:
Rodney L. Brown, Lieutenant, Detroit Fire Department (retired). Emergency Vehicle Operations Coordinator for both the Oakland Police and Fire Academies. Rodney was Lead Instructor for the Detroit Fire Department’s EVO Section for 10 years, he served 6 years as the Fire Training Coordinator for the State of Michigan and four years as a Michigan State Police Trooper (1986-1990). Rodney brings extensive experience in public safety, emergency response, leadership, and professional instruction. He has 22 years of distinguished service in the United States Army (retired), which encompassed 7 years of active-duty service as a Military Police Sergeant, Army Reserves as a Drill Sergeant, Sergeant First Class, and Senior Military Instructor.
Chester Bartle retired from the Waterford Police Department at the rank of Lieutenant. During his 25+ year career in law enforcement, Lt. Bartle served the Township of Waterford in numerous roles across the patrol, investigative and administrative bureaus of the organization which included assignments with the Motor Unit, Special Operations Unit and the Oakland County Auto Theft Task Force. With over 10 years experience as an Emergency Vehicle Operations Instructor, Lt. Bartle has created several scenario based driving programs that are designed to induce stress in a controlled environment and require students to implement multiple training disciplines to successfully complete the scenario.
Course Description:
Emergency Vehicle Operations (EVO) is a one-day refresher course designed for officers interested in operating a patrol vehicle safely and efficiently. Students will receive lecture at the start of the course followed by hands-on driving on a specially-designed MCOLES course along with the opportunity to run through several scripted scenarios in our state of the art FAAC Driving Simulator.
In order to provide a more realistic training environment for Police Officers, the Oakland Police Academy will be introducing an Afternoon (3:00pm-12:00am) and Midnight (10:30pm-7:00am) shift course times to mirror Officers’ regular work schedules and to also replicate low light/night driving conditions emphasizing a “Train as you Operate, Operate as you Train” philosophy.
Topics Include:
- Legalities, Policies and Procedures of Emergency Vehicle Operations
- Emergency Response and Vehicle Pursuits
- Collision avoidance techniques and maneuvers (hands on driving cone course)
- Driving Simulator (Scripted Emergency Response & Pursuit Scenarios)
Required Equipment:
- Patrol/Emergency Response Vehicle must be equipped with emergency lights, and remove all excess equipment from cabin/trunk area prior to arrival
- Wet weather gear (we will drive in the rain)
- Sun Screen/Head Cover
- Hydration Supplies
- Dramamine or equivalent if you are prone to motion sickness (consult your personal physician before use of any medication)
NOTE: The driving course for this particular class IS NOT designed for Pickups or Extended Version Expeditions, Excursions or Suburban’s, etc.
