Oakland Community College (OCC) invites students, faculty, staff and community members to engage in Pride Month through educational programming that reflects the College’s commitment to academic freedom, critical inquiry and respectful dialogue.

Observed globally each June, Pride Month provides a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the historical, social, and cultural experiences of individuals with diverse lived experiences. This period of learning is rooted in the events of June 1969, when a police raid at the Stonewall Inn in New York City sparked several days of protest. These events are widely recognized as a pivotal moment in the modern movement for civil rights and recognition of people with same-gender relationships and those whose gender expression differs from traditional expectations.

Through lectures, creative activities and campus-based events, OCC invites participants to explore the historical context and ongoing significance of these movements in a scholarly and respectful environment.

“At OCC, we want to ensure that our students and employees feel safe, supported and encouraged to be themselves,” said Kristina Marshall, Director of Institutional Standards and Practices. “Pride Month offers a chance for learning, dialogue and connection.”

As part of OCC’s commitment to a respectful and growth-oriented community, the Office of Institutional Standards and Practices serves as a valuable resource for students and employees seeking support, guidance and meaningful connections. Whether facing challenges, exploring new opportunities for engagement, or seeking to better understand the campus community, individuals are encouraged to reach out to the office for assistance.

Create your own rainbow — celebrate your unique story

Each of us brings a different story, perspective, and background, and every rainbow reflects a unique journey. This creative activity invites individuals to design a rainbow that represents YOU and how you experience the world.

Join us in the OCC Library—a space where stories are shared, creativity is nurtured, and reflection is encouraged. The library is more than just books: it’s a place for self-expression, learning and connection.

Ideas and inspiration to get started

The rainbow is a powerful symbol that reflects both individuality and a sense of community. Your creation should reflect your personal journey through color, pattern, symbolism or words—expressing the values, passions and experiences that shape who you are. Let your creativity bring your unique story to life and might include:

  • Choosing colors that reflect your background, values or personality.
  • Including symbols that have personal meaning such as nature, cultural elements, milestones or values meaningful to your journey.
  • Using textures or patterns that represent your growth or experiences.
  • Adding words or phrases that define who you are or who you hope to become, keeping in mind that this is an opportunity for positive and respectful self-expression.

Each rainbow will be as unique as the person who creates it—just like every individual in our OCC community. When displayed together, these creations will form a collective mosaic of creativity, self-expression, and shared experience, celebrating the many journeys that make us who we are.
