Pre-Apprenticeship Skilled Trades
Program Description
The Pre-Apprenticeship Skilled Trades program is designed to provide participants with the essential skills and knowledge needed to enter and success in a Registered Apprenticeship Program(RAP) or employment in the advanced manufacturing industry. This program offers the foundational knowledge to prepare participants for a successful future as in skilled trades. Upon successful completion, students may earn an OSHA 10 safety card, NC3 Work Ethic Employability and Precision, Measurement, and Instrumentation certificates, up to eight OCC college credits, and an OCC certificate of program completion.

Module Descriptions
Applied Math – 45 hours
This course will provide the industrial focused student with the fundamentals of Algebra,
Geometry and simple angle calculations as applied to practical industrial problems
that arise in skilled trades areas.
Blueprint Reading – 45 hours
Students will read and interpret design/manufacturing prints (2D drawings). An emphasis
will be placed on how the print information (views, dimensions, notes, symbols, tolerances,
tables, etc.) is used to fully describe and produce physical parts, tools, or processes.
Metrology – 30 hours
This course will introduce the student to the concepts of measurement systems, units,
measuring tools, calibration and validation. Students will learn how to properly
adjust, hold, utilize, maintain and calibrate a variety of common measuring tools
such as rules, calipers, micrometers, gage blocks, angle and thread measurement devices,
etc.
Manufacturing Safety OSHA 10 – 10 hours
This course provides training for entry-level workers on the recognition, avoidance,
abatement, and prevention of safety and health hazards in workplaces, as well as information
regarding workers’ rights and employer responsibilities. Through this training, OSHA
helps to ensure that workers have the knowledge they need to stay safe on the job.
Students who successfully complete this course receive an OSHA 10-Hour General Industry
card from the OSHA Training Institute – a credential that holds value for a lifetime.
Additional Course Content
Workplace Skills
Students will improve competence in employability skills that are essential to success
in the workplace. Students will address communication and explore how to establish
a stronger work ethic.
Career Readiness
Students will be provided with resources and tools to be successful in the labor market.
Personal branding, including resume and interview skills, will be addressed with
the assistance of a career coach. Students will learn how to use LinkedIn as part
of the job search process.
Employer Engagement
Students will gain greater understanding of the advanced manufacturing industry through
employer interactions such as off-site tours, on-site guest speakers, and/or Interview
Day.
