PLC and Robotic Technician
Program Description
The PLC and Robotic Technician training prepares students for a future role in advanced manufacturing by providing industry essential skills, electrical, mechanical and operational knowledge of robotics, and a strong focus on programmable logic controllers. Participants are prepared to join the automation industry with entry level installation, programming, and troubleshooting skills. Upon successful completion of the training students may earn the OSHA 10 certification, Fanuc Level 1 certification, and related SACA micro credentials along with a Mike Rowe Work Ethic certificate and Certificate of Completion from OCC.
- Classroom location: Auburn Hills Campus
- Schedule: Full time, Monday thru Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm
- Duration: 14 weeks
- Format: In-person
Module Descriptions
OSHA 10-Hour General Industry – 10 hours
This course provides training for entry-level workers on the recognition, avoidance,
abatement, and prevention of safety and health hazards in workplaces, as well as information
regarding workers’ rights and employer responsibilities. Through this training, OSHA
helps to ensure that workers have the knowledge they need to stay safe on the job.
Students who successfully complete this course receive an OSHA 10-Hour General Industry
card from the OSHA Training Institute – a credential that holds value for a lifetime.
Industrial Math I – 24 hours
This course will provide the industrial focused student with the fundamentals of Algebra,
Geometry and simple angle calculations as applied to practical industrial problems
that arise in skilled trades areas.
Industrial Blueprint Reading – 16 hours
Students will read and interpret design/manufacturing prints (2D drawings). An emphasis
will be placed on how the print information (views, dimensions, notes, symbols, tolerances,
tables, etc.) is used to fully describe and produce physical parts, tools, or processes.
Basic Electrical – 40 hours
This course covers Ohm’s Law and Kirchoff’s Law. Students will develop proficiency
in wiring electrical control devices, testing, debugging, and troubleshooting.
Digital Electronics – 40 hour
This course addresses series circuits, parallel circuits, and series-parallel circuits
as well as Capacitive Reactance. Hands-on training with resisters, diodes, capacitors
and digital inputs/outputs in conjunction with the programming of electronic boards
will help students gain proficiency with electrical components and building functioning
electronic circuits.
Fluid Power – 40 hours
This is a fundamental course for those who will operate, troubleshoot, and maintain
fluid power equipment. The course provides the knowledge and skills required to
safely operate, diagnose, and repair fluid power components.
Electronic Sensors – 40 hours
In this course students will learn how to install, adjust, and maintain Allen-Bradley
photo eyes, limit switches, proximity switches, and laser switches. Students will
learn to wire, install, adjust, and have the digital inputs and outputs properly report
to the PLC. Basic ladder logic will be written to see how the sensors function when
wired correctly and given the necessary voltage.
Motor Controls– 40 hours
This course will take the learner through the Amatrol Motor Control labs to learn
how to wire industry standard motor controls. Two wire circuits will be wired as well
as three wire circuits, and status indicators. Various components will be introduced
into the hardwiring to monitor the status of switches and various configurations.
FANUC Programming and Operation – 40 hours
In this course students will gain the fundamental knowledge to operate, program edit,
and maintain the FANUC R-30iA/iB controller and robot. This course will provide the
students with the knowledge and skills required to safely operate the robot and create/edit
robot programs.
FANUC Electrical Maintenance – 40 hours
In this course students will gain fundamental knowledge to troubleshoot and maintain
the FANUC R-30iiB controller and robot. This course will provide students with the
knowledge and skills required to safely diagnose and repair the robot utilizing Fanuc
application software.
FANUC Advanced Programming and Operation– 40 hours
This course addresses advance-level programming of the FANUC R-30iiB controller and
robot, and the setup and operation of the iRVision system. Students will gain the
knowledge and skills required to edit a background programs, apply offsets, set up
Marcos, set up and modify Dual-Check Safety parameters, payload, and collision detection.
PLC 1– 40 hours
Using Rockwell software the students in this course will learn how to install hardware
and program a GuardLogix Processor using various ladder logic instruction sets.
PLC 2– 40 hours
This Rockwell Software ethernet course introduces the learner to ethernet communication
theory as well as applied techniques to program, troubleshoot, replace and configure
ethernet devices. Logic will be written and ramp up/down speeds will be tested, simulating
adjustments made to working conveyors. DC Braking will be introduced and programmed
to stop a motor. Students will learn skills necessary to troubleshoot and replace
Allen-Bradley 525 VFD’s.
PLC 3– 40 hours
This Studio 5000 GuardLogix course is designed to enhance the training received in
PLC 1 and PLC 2. This class will address the necessary skills to go online with the
PLC and be able to search, cross reference, toggle, force, branch, upload, and download,
as well as making back-up copies of the logic. Safety Logic and Safety Signatures
will be introduced, programmed, and studied for functionality. Emergency Stops and
Gate Plugs will be programmed. You will also learn skills necessary to troubleshoot
and replace Allen-Bradley 525 VFD’s.
PLC 4– 40 hours
The learner will take a S7-1500 Fail Safe Processor and configure a Simatic ET 200SP
Remote Rack with a Fail-Safe Input module, Fail Safe Output Module, 16 Input Module,
16 Output Module 4 Output Module, and a G120 Variable Frequency Drive. Some inputs
and outputs will be hard wired to an operator run bar, a stop light, and a Siemens
G120 Variable Frequency Drive.
