Choosing a career starts with getting to know yourself—your interests, strengths, and what matters most to you. The career counselors at Oakland Community College (OCC) are here to help you figure that out and guide you along the way.

We can help you with:

• Exploring career options
• Clarifying goals or direction
• Working through uncertainty or indecision

Our counselors will work with you to explore career options that fit who you are. They’ll also connect you with helpful tools and resources so you can make confident, informed choices.

Career Counseling vs. Career Services: What's the Difference?

Career Counseling and Career Services are closely related, but they serve different roles.

Career Counseling is more personal, exploratory, and typically occurs earlier during your academic journey, though discovery can occur at all stages of your life. It is focused on helping you understand your strengths and interests and how those connect to potential career paths. 

Career Services is more action-oriented and resource-based. It helps you take the next steps once you have some direction, are nearing completion of your degree or program, or are otherwise preparing for entry into the workforce. These services include resume help, interview prep, and assistance with finding employment or internships.
